From 8:1 to 2:1: How Ukraine Balanced the Artillery Scales

Ukraine's targeted strikes on Russian ammunition depots throughout 2024, particularly since September, have drastically reduced Russia's artillery firepower and disrupted supply lines. By destroying over 75,000 tons of ammunition, these attacks forced Russia to ration artillery, relocate stockpiles, and rely on outdated or imported munitions, weakening its offensive capabilities. The shortage has shifted Russian tactics to infantry-based assaults with minimal fire support, resulting in unsustainable casualty rates. This strategic focus by Ukraine has not only leveled the artillery imbalance but also significantly degraded Russia’s long-term operational capacity.
