Ukrainian forces recently countered a Russian offensive in Toretsk, forcing Russian units into retreat. The Russian assault focused on capturing the Zabalka district in southern Toretsk to cut off Ukrainian forces from the central high-rise area. Control over Zabalka would have enabled Russian forces to reinforce their positions in the city’s center. After advancing with minimal resistance, Russian reconnaissance units assumed an efficient assault was feasible. However, Ukrainian forces, positioned on terrikons and at a coal mine complex west of Zabalka, leveraged these vantage points for effective artillery and drone strikes, disrupting the Russian units and halting their advance. Ukrainian stormtroopers, backed by armored vehicles, then moved into the disorganized Russian-held gray zone, launching a counterattack that decimated the Russian units and forced a withdrawal. Despite subsequent Russian airstrikes, the Ukrainian counterattack has undermined Russian positions, setting the stage for further Ukrainian operations in Toretsk.
